Reef Credits

Reef Credits

To improve the water quality on the reef which can be impacted by fertiliser and sediment runoff, the State government has allocated a Reef Fund for landholders to access.

The fund will help landowners reduce their fertiliser usage and sediment loss through surface water runoff. These methods stem from regenerative farming practices and can specifically focus on gully restoration and other such rehabilitation projects. From this, ‘reef credits’ will be calculated and further monitored.

Through this scheme, land is rehabilitated, topsoil is preserved, water quality surround the reef is improved and the reef credit scheme provides the landholder with a financial incentive to implement regenerative practices.

Please note that to be eligible for the Reef Credit scheme, you will need to be a landowner in a Great Barrier Reef catchment area.
